New York in Public: Advocacy, Politics & Remembrance

Photo essay · New York City

From a City Hall press conference to a street demonstration and an FDNY procession, this selection records different ways New Yorkers gather in public. The photographs come from several events; they are not a single unfolding story.

Immigration and community advocacy

Inside City Hall, speakers face reporters while supporters display signs reading “Immigrants Are New York” and “I Love Immigrant NY.” Other photographs show a gathering against a purple 1199SEIU backdrop, including a button bearing the Haitian flag. An outdoor press conference brings together speakers, union members, and community supporters.

Public demonstration

Protesters carry Palestinian flags and handmade placards, with banners stretching across the front of a street gathering. The images document the signs and scale of the assembly without establishing its exact date or the full sequence of events.

Campaigning and the press

A campaign-room scene places a speaker among supporters and election signs. A separate photograph shows a speaker facing a cluster of television microphones outdoors.

Remembrance

Uniformed FDNY members carry American flags and a banner reading “343 Still Counting” as spectators watch. The procession connects public remembrance with the continuing legacy of September 11.
