Clothes are the easiest thing to get right before a shoot and the hardest thing to fix after. A few simple rules help a lot.
Start with fit
Clothes that fit well always photograph better than expensive clothes that do not. Press everything the night before.
Choose colors that work with the city
Solid, rich colors stand out against busy streets: navy, deep green, rust, cream and black. Avoid small, tight patterns and big logos. They pull attention away from your face.
Couples: coordinate, do not match
Pick one color family and let each person wear a different piece of it. One neutral and one color works well. Identical outfits look stiff.
Headshots: think about where the photo will live
For LinkedIn and business, a jacket or a simple collared top. For acting headshots, solid colors that bring out your eyes and nothing that dates the photo. Read how to prepare for your NYC headshot session for more.
Dress for the weather and bring layers
New York weather changes fast. Bring a coat you are happy to be photographed in, and comfortable shoes for walking between spots. Change into nicer shoes for the photos if you need to.
Pack a small kit
a second outfit
a lint roller
hair ties and a small comb
lip balm or powder
water
