New York is full of places that look great on camera, but they do not all work the same way. Here is where to shoot, what each spot is good for, and when to go.
Central Park
Best for couples, families and engagement photos. Bethesda Terrace, the Bow Bridge and the Mall give you classic New York with lots of green. Go early on weekdays. Weekend afternoons are packed.
DUMBO and the Brooklyn waterfront
Best for skyline shots and anyone who wants the photo everyone recognizes. Cobblestone streets, the Manhattan Bridge framed between buildings and the waterfront views. Sunrise is the quiet time.
The West Village
Best for relaxed, editorial-looking portraits. Brownstones, trees and small streets with very little traffic. It works almost any time of day.
Midtown and the Flatiron area
Best for city energy, business portraits and a busier backdrop. Yellow cabs, tall buildings and street life. Plan for movement and keep the session tight.
The studio
Best for headshots, maternity, glamour and any day the weather turns. Controlled light, clean backgrounds and no crowds. The studio is at 115 W 29th St in Manhattan, a few blocks from Penn Station.
Mix it up
Many visitors start in the studio for clean portraits and finish outdoors for the city look. The indoor and outdoor sessions are built for that.
